Teachers take the streets in Peru to demand for salary increase

Police in riot gears used water canons and tear gas to break up a crowd of teachers striking in Peru. Teachers have been demonstrating for weeks to demand for an increase in their salary. The demonstrators in Lima made their way through the Capital City but they were blocked from reaching the Congressional Building.

But Peruvian President Pablo Kuczynski urged the teachers to go back to work and reject violence. He admits teachers have not had a significant salary increase for more than a decade.

However he says his government has already given them a raise and another one is due at the end of the year. Raising teachers salaries was a campaign promise of Kucynzski.
