METRO MANILA, Philippines – Ngayong taon ang pangatlong pagkakataon na babalik sa Thailand si Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte. Dahil sa June 22 hanggang 23, makikibahagi ang Punong Ehekutibo sa 34th ASEAN Summit kasama ang iba pang heads of member states kung saan ang Thailand ang Chairman ngayong taon.

Kabilang naman ang pitong miyembro ng gabinete sa delegasyon ng Pangulo sa regional event.

Ayon kay Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Junever Mahilum-West, tiyak na matatalakay ang isyu hinggil sa South China Sea. At in general, maaari ring mabuksan ang usapin sa pinakahuling insidente sa Recto Bank sa ASEAN leader’s retreat upang maisulong ang usapin sa pagkakaroon ng code of conduct sa South China Sea.

“Pwede namang during exchange of views on regional development, there is an opening to raise these issues, because incidents like what happened emphasized the importance of having a code of conduct so that we could avoid, we could prevent these incidents from happening in the future.” Ayon kay DFA Asec. Junever Mahilum-West.

Gayunman, nilinaw ng opisyal na premature pang sabihing na tiyak na matatalakay nang malaliman ng pilipinas sa summit ang sea ramming incident sa Recto Bank.

Ito ay lalo na’t iniimbestigahan pa ng pamahalaan ng Pilipinas at ng China ang insidente.

Hinihintay pa rin ang tugon ng China sa diplomatic protest ng Pilipinas hinggil sa umano’y abandonment sa mga Filipino fishermen.

 “For one thing, there is this investigation that’s ongoing, that up to the present discloses a certain fact that we did not know before. Also, we lodged a strong protest with china and we are awaiting china’s response to this. So in the meantime that these major factors are pending, i think it would be premature of me to — premature of me to say that we will raise the issue at the summit.” Ani DFA Asec. Ang mga highlight ng ASEA Summit na inaasahang dadaluhan ng Pangulo ay ang summit plenary, gala dinner, leaders’ retreat, at ang 13th Brunei Darrusalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEASN growth area or BIMP-EAGA summit.

Inaasahan namang magkakaroon din ng bilateral meeting ang Punong Ehekutibo sa ibang ASEAN leaders.

Samantala, ‘di pa tiyak kung magkakaroon naman ng pagkakataon ang Presidente na makapulong ang Filipino community sa Bangkok dahil sa hectic schedule nito.
