Crowds of students cheered as Britain’s Prince Harry arrived at the Mackie Academy in Stonehaven, Scotland on Tuesday.

The 32-year-old royal met with teachers and pupils involved in the Diana award’s light touch mentoring programme which trains people from across Scotland to become youth mentors in their schools.

Students told stories about their mentors and wrote their names on signs.

Harry took part and told the audience how a colour sergeant at Sandhurst military academy helped build his confidence.

The Diana award was set up in memory of his mother Princess Diana who died in a car crash in Paris when Harry was 12 years old.

Mackie Academy was the first of three stops on the prince’s first official visit to Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, focusing on mentoring and the importance of sport as a means for helping youngsters to develop.
